|On Tuesday last, 16th October, students from Sancta Maria College attended the Comhairle na nÓg AGM in Breaffy Arena in Castlebar. There were 20 other schools from Mayo there and from the start, it was going to be a place where ideas would be shared and listened to.
Comhairle na nÓg is a child and youth council in Ireland that gives children and young people the opportunity to be involved in the development of local services and policies.
The theme this year was Inclusion and the guest speakers were Joanne O’ Riordan and Bradley Brock, both influential in advocating for inclusion based on their own backgrounds.
All of the students there were put into groups to talk about their experiences of inclusion and where they felt inclusion could be better promoted in the community. Within these groups, representatives went forward to be elected to the Comhairle and votes were cast before the students regrouped in the arena to discuss what their groups had talked about.
In Sancta Maria, we are lucky to have a number of representatives on Comhairle; Keelan Foy, Emma Finnegan, Caoimhe Mc Nally, and as of last Tuesdy, José Da Silva.
This is a great honour for the school and we are looking forward to hearing about all the work they are doing. Well done to all involved.
